Scotsman MeridianTM Ice Machine

Upon understanding Scotman's goals in the new product design, PDT's research team decided qualitative research would reveal the most valuable information and insight for our designers.

Our team traveled to some of the most prestigious hospitals in the Midwest to take a comprehensive look into how the ice machines were being used, maintained and serviced.

The information revealed while spending time with nurses, doctors and maintenance team was crucial for providing a direction for design. Current work-arounds created by these users were eye-opening and inspired new functionalities for the machines.

The most important new features for the Meridian product line focus on easily accessible components (i.e. air filter, ice tray and chute), ensuring longevity and cleanliness for the hospital staff and patients.

The ergonomics in this new design allow the Meridian to be cleaned without any extra tools. The thought process behind this design was to build a cohesive machine that can easily be maintained by everyday users and not just maintenance guys.

The air filter, ice bin, splash guard and angled front chutes can all be removed and cleaned by everyday users, making this the most fluent, clean design in Scotsman's line up. Also, a more sensitive IR sensor allows users to fill up any cup, bag or bin needed for patient's care.

Born out of extensive market research, Meridian was developed with space, production and installation in mind. It provides the softest, most satisfying ice on the market today.
