Motorola HFI200 Ring Scanner

Motorola's HFI200 is a hands-free, finger-worn, 2D barcode mass scanning tool designed for package sorters, package handlers, and other routing, distribution and warehouse personnel. The wearable design of the device allows both hands to be used during loading and unloading and speeds up the scanning process. Engineered by PDT, the complex product incorporates an imager, Bluetooth antenna, battery pack, index and middle finger interface, and audio/visual feedback elements. The scanning device reads bar codes, takes pictures and communicates wirelessly to an overhead mesh network connected to the main computer network.

Enormous technology and function was incorporated into a small and elegant package that truly is wearable. Sensitivity to design was maintained in the face of very challenging engineering and program requirements. PDT's engineers worked to design the device to pass all of Motorola's reliability tests for hand held products including shock, drop, vibration, temperature shock, humidity, EMI/RFI. In addition, the device is sealed to an IP65 standard, which is dust tight and protected against jetting water. Sealing to an IP65 standard in such a small package with many leak paths is a notable achievement. The device features a finger strap that was designed to be comfortable and adjustable with one hand, yet safe for its environment. The strap was engineered to have a break away contingency and able to break away to avoid possible hand injury in the event the device gets caught in a truck door or jammed onto part of the truck. The team also developed an eight station charger which is utilized between shifts. Batteries or units are exchanged at the charging station between shifts to allow for 24 hour operation.
