PDT transformed the design of Dymo's existing embossing technology to fit the needs of a new target market, children ages 5 to 10. PDT determined potential concepts based on consumer research, ergonomic data and guidelines, and applicable force reduction mechanisms. An ergonomic pistol grip was designed based on observations of how children naturally try to squeeze the trigger. The angled wheel allows the label to be easily read. A modified embossing mechanism improved performance. These advancements, added to self-contained embossing tapes that print away from the body, electronic voice technology and dual-colored parts turned an adult’s product into a child's tool.
